they call, dont identify who they are , ask for me, and then say you owe us money, and better pay up, have no idea who they are.

The third party collectors pocket whatever money they scam from you and it does not affect your credit report one way or the other.

when you look at your credit report and on the right side it will say how late you are,,,or it will say charged off. that means the original company has used your non-payment for a writeoff at tax time.....the profit and loss statements......this way they dont really lose the money....then the vultcures come out and buy the bad paper in hopes that they can scam you out of your money and make a commission....

How do you find out that your bill has been written off by a company? It would be handy to know because I've been in the same situation recently.

i get these calls all the time. lots of medical collectors, and credit card collectors. all this because i had no health insurance and then no job. i was told that once the company charges you off on their profit and loss statements to the irs that its over. then you get collection vultures calling you and trying to make a deal with you. the money you owed that they collect goes to them....not the company you originally owed. whats funny is these people have worse credit than you most of the time and have no right to ask for anything until they get there credit cleaned up.
