Calling from a Jail in Franklin County, Nebraska

Got a call from this number and I think it's whatever number the county jails use to connect these collect calls from the jails.  They called several times, and then I got a call from a local (816) number.  I did call that one back because I felt like it was related.  The lady asked if I had someone in jail down in Holden.  I responded no, but they keep calling my phone.  She said they had the wrong number and they wouldn't be calling again.  If you don't know anybody in jail, ignore these calls.  They are very expensive to accept.  I would have to be extremely tied to someone to even consider paying for one of these.

I received several of these calls from the same number with a caller ID of Accurate Commun back to back several times within a 3 week period. I was suspicious because area code 402 is our of Nebraska. I contacted the local Sheriff's dept and they told me they have an inmate phone service provider named EnCartele based our of Nebraska and was a legit call. But the problem they called my cell phone and I knew no one incarcerated. The Sheriff said the inmate probably entered a wrong number.  So the calls are not necesarily a scam but probably an inmate who is incapable of punching the correct number on a telephone. The Sheriff also told me that he could block my number from being called if i wanted to. So that is an option.

This is not necessarily a scam call.  Someone is calling you from a jail that uses this calling service.  The companies name is Encartele their contact info is: 800-562-7062  866-476-6723 website: encartele.net.  They are in NE, but your call can be coming from any jail in the US that they service.  If you get a call from them check if that troubled relative you have was arrested (you know the one).. You can also have your number blocked from getting inmate calls, and don't except collect calls from inmates you don't know-- If you don't except there is no charge.

Government pays only lip service to the do-not-call registry and to telephone fraud in general.
My wife just got a similar call and did not respond to the request for approval of a collect call. I'll watch our bill and if we get charged I will report it to anyone who is interested.

This number is actually the collect phone number that appears on my phone when my daughter calls me collect from St. Claire County in Osceola Missouri. It is not a scam, it's the primary number that all collect calls come from, in the jail system from that county. Maybe if you ever spent a night there you wouldn't bad mouth people that are in there. Check out your stories before you post false info on this site. You might mislead someone who is trying to find a loved one in jail as you almost did me. The number I get is 1-402-978-7565 which is for outgoing calls only. You have to call the jail of choice to speak to an official there if you are wanting to locate someone.

I also have received 3 calls today within 5 minutes of each other, claiming it was from Pettis County Jail in Missouri. The caller ID indicated from Accurate Communications with the same 402 area code. Sorry this is not the area code of Pettis County. The first one was similar to one of the above posts from a girl named Ashley and the next time is was from someone else who i could not understand. So obviously it is a scam........ Like you all suggested, one more time and i will let it go do voice mail and i will take it to the sheriff.

I have a long-time friend currently in the Clay County Missouri Jail, who is trying to set up with me a power-of-attorney so I can access her bills and bank accounts and pay them for her. She called twice; her calls are legit, BUT . . .

The first call came up as "Accurate Communications" on my caller ID, and when answered, I got the recorded notification this was an inmate, etc., a collect call, did I wish to accept. After getting through all that, we were able to have the conversation.

The second call is the concerning one. It was her again, but Accurate Communications said my telephone number was unable to receive collect calls, and gave a thirty-second "complimentary" call, which basically allowed us to say hi-bye before they cut it off. I then received a message following the call inviting me to call them back to settle the issue.

I first called my own telephone company (CenturyLink). My phone is not blocked from accepting collect calls, even from the Clay County Jail.

I then called Accurate Communications, which told me if I wished to continue receiving calls from her, I would be required to use a debit or credit card to set up a deposit account with them which she could draw on to make calls to me.

The law says that states, counties, or jails may not put "unreasonable impediments" on a resident's telephone calls (but may put time, place, and manner restrictions).

I do not use nor have credit cards. No bank in this area issues them or debit cards anyway. Moreover, I would be less than sanguine about handing over such information to a company I'd never heard of before.

When I explained this, the operator stated that "I could go to Wal-Mart to buy a pre-paid card and give them the number." (I wouldn't shop at Wal-Mart if you paid me, and anyway the nearest one is sixty miles from my home.) I asked if they have a rate chart. No. I asked if they would refund any balance should she get out before it was used up. No.

My next step will be to call the FCC. They are representing these calls as "collect" (that is, billed through my phone company) when they in fact want me to set up a non-refundable account (bypassing my telephone company).

In addition, this appears to be an unreasonable restriction (but on me accepting collect telephone calls, not on her ability to call), thus I will also be contacting the Kansas-Western Mo. American Civil Liberties Union, and the Federal Communications Commission to find out the legality of this practice.

While the call from the Clay County Jail was from who it purported to be, the manner in which this company is handling the calls seems shady at best.

Prank Call
I received a phone call from 402-978-7565 on 04/27/13 about 12:53PM. The Caller pronounced his name so quickly that I wasn't even able to understand him. Next a prerecorded message came on announcing this call was from a jail some where, but again I wouldn't know where. I don't usually receive phone calls from Inmates or Detainees or Prisoners. It sucks to be this person. He got himself locked up & as far as I'm concerned he can stay locked up. I hung up on him.

It is a call from someone in jail trying to reach you.  I live in MO and my caller id showed Omaha NE, my niece is being held in Branson MO (I think).  I can't call her back and wasn't given a choice as to how to put the call thru, but I did hear her voice and I know she is in jail so it is a legit service.

I have received calls from this number 3 times and 1 voice mail.  Mine says a collect
call from the Marshall County jail.  I immediately hang one.  Next time it happens, if it does,
I'm letting it go to voice mail and then taking that to the sheriff's office.

I just got a call from this number at 12:49 am and didn't answer and the person left a message. Weird thing considering all the reports so far. This was a woman saying "hey girl it's (couldnt understand the name) call me back" when I try to call it back it's either busy or saying "This number is not a working number please try your call again"

This is a collect phone call service that provides phones to jails/prisons. The area code is Omaha, but the calls can be from prisons anywhere.  Calls from the Clay County Missouri jail show up with this number and they are collect calls.
