Caller is probably a third, fourth, etc. party debt collector attempting to collect on an old debt (that has been sold many times over the years) by calling the telephone number the debtor had many many years ago. This category of debt collector gets paid for collecting debts, not specifically for collecting debts from the debtor who incurred the debt, and may attempt to harass the party currently assigned the debtor's old telephone number into paying the debt. This category of debt collector rarely has the information needed to be able to provide a full accounting of the debt. If you are contacted by such a predator, I highly suggest that you obtain as much information as possible about the caller and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
