Caller is calling from India. Has an Indian accent. Says her name is Mary. Wants to verify the phone number she just called. I don't. Says My daughter is late on a payment of $120.00 to Rhodes. I looked up Rhodes on the internet and found out it is a furniture store. My daughter has never bought furniture from Rhodes. Caller says she is calling for HSBC I ask what HSBC stands for? She explains Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation. The name that they say is on the account is similiar to my daughter's. It is one letter off. I get the feeling they are fishing for information. They say they have records but will not tell me what is in their record or where they got their information. The whole thing sounds suspicious to me.

I ask who she was and what it concerned. She said it was personal business. She wouldn't give me any more info then that. I told her to give me her phone # and I would have him call her back. The same thing is happening to us. This lady, with a South Asian (possibly Indian or Bengali)keeps asking for my husband. As in the comment above, she couldn't pronounce his name  properly either. She's called about 10 times today already. I asked her to leave her number because she wouldn't tell me what the call for my husband was about and I was getting tired of all her constant calling; she just said that it was personal business and that she couldn't disclose any info on her "company." She only told me the name of her company was HSBC retail services. We are very suspicious given that we have no connection with a company of the sort. We both agree this is a total scam.

This is also BEST BUY people! AND if someone gave a made up phone number because they knew they were going to stiff them after a purchase, you will be getting the calls, mostly outsourced to india, until you tell them IT ISN'T YOU!  I have been getting calls ever since the first day I got my supposed NEW cell number for a Patrick Smith who stiffed about everyone he could. I even put my numbers on the do not call list....not working and it has been long enough for it to take and has been put on them more than once. The fact that companies outsource to people who don't give a damn is one major problem and those companies should be boycotted. You can get anything you want from reputable companies that don't employ stupid practices IF YOU WANT TO. Otherwise, people need to stop complaining. Aint nothing free...if you get a deal then maybe this is how you pay!!!  I currently am getting another annoying series of calls but I say hello and it hangs up. They have called 3 times so far today.  First time I hung up on them, then the second time they said I owed $125 payment to Rhodes.  I had an idea they were from Best Buy and figured I'd misheard the Rhodes,  I told them honestly that I couldn't pay it right now and hung up.  Third time, a few minutes ago,  someone else answered and they left this number.

We need some new phones anyway, you can bet that they will have caller id and blocking ability.  Cost a little extra from the phone company, but will be well worth it.

I agree that some people like to make up numbers and then bolt.  But there are also more people that have lost their jobs or another emergency, and are either barely hanging on or really can't pay at the moment.  Good people in bad circumstances.  

People in my area are getting laid off every day and are really scrambling to make ends meet, more and more simply can't. I'm lucky that I at least have a roof over my heard and something to eat while I'm looking for work.

I hear you're angry; I would be too.  I'm only saying that I will and do pay/pay on my bills when I can.  Plus the local Best Buy has always been nice to me and fairly speedy with repairs, especially when I was going to school online. I wasn't too happy with out of store repairs that fixed one problem and created another, but those are other stories.

Not everyone tries to stiff you or someone else, there are still a lot of good people in this world.

I know I never dreamed I'd be in this position.  I try to stay positive, and take each day as it comes.  I'm not out to stiff anyone - which is why constant collection calls really tick me off!

A lady by the name of Dolly keeps leaving me messages to call her back at 1-800-538-5814, yet she never says why.  She calls at least twice a day, though sometimes more.

My guy ask for my wife and then when she was not available ask for her spouse. Then wanted me to say yes to being responsible for her account with Musician's Friend. I said yes and he ask me for a checking account number to payoff the $52 that was on the account. I laughed. He gave me the same number as everyone else here and the extension 632. There must be a whole warehouse of them working this scam. The number shows "unknown" on caller ID. I started ansewring the phone because I want to talk to some one and harass them back. Next time I am going to give them my ex-wife's checking account numbers.

Received calls from an unknown number every 45-60mins.  They would either hang up on the answering machine or hang up on us when we answered.  Called before 8am and as late as 9pm.  Finally got them at 8:30pm on Sunday night.  Spoke with a woman named Mary who explained that it was a personal business matter for my mother.  (She has an HBSC Best Buy card that was just paid off in full.) She said she would call back later.  I said if it was such an important matter she should leave a number and she said again she would call back later.  I told her that we were receiving upwards of 15 calls a day every hour or less for the last 3 days, so obviously it was a pressing matter and she needed to leave a number.  She reluctantly gave me 800-538-5814 x794.  I expressed that it was really disruptive having the phone ring hourly, and that the FTC considered this to be harassment and that she needed to take our phone number off the auto-dialer or I would be registering a complaint.  She could only say "sorry" and that it was a personal business matter.  Not sure she knew many other words of English.  We have been receiving calls from HBSC trying to sell us services for weeks.  Each time I request to be taken off their list they call us again from another number. Filed a complaint via the FTC website and I encourage anyone else getting harassing calls from these people to do the same!!

Best Buy credit card company, HSBC. I just paid my credit card off in full about 2 weeks ago and now they keep calling me. i just ignore them. probably trying to sell me something. I have never been past due either, which is y I dont care to pick up.

I kept receiving calls from an "Unavailable" number. When I answered I also received the "Please hold for an important call!" message. Then Indian-sounding guy using broken english said I owed $20 from my Guitar Center Card acount (which I have set on auto-pay and is always up to date) and asked if I could pay it today. I said I'd do it online later (already thinking this sounded like a scam). He insisted on doing it by phone now so I asked for a number and he gave me the 1-800-538-5814 ext169 and asked when I'd be calling (evenj more suspicious). I looked it up and found this page (thanks posters). I had him on hold while I read on.

After that I told him I know this is a scam and to go f^%#$ himself.

Finally got fed up and answered: "Please hold for an important call!" Are they kidding? Indian-esqe man picks up quickly, looking for my husband. "A personal business matter", he says. Pertaining to what? "A personal business matter." After much tooth-pulling on my part(he doesn't want to give up any info!), he learns I have access to the HSBC-related card-in-question, and informs me of a past due payment. He wanted my checking account info to process the payment immediately, but I told him I wasn't going to do that right now. Got his call-back info instead. I'll look for my statement or an on-line option instead. I don't want to give this guy my bank and routing info, even if the payment IS late. Thanks, other posters!

same call at 1000-1100 every day asking for my boss, but they will not disclose any info, even when his secretary asks them.

Nov 27, 07 I have no outstanding debt. Get a call from Mary. First Mary wants to verify the number she just reached me at. I didnt verify the number. Mary is located in India. Calling for Hongkong Shanghi Banking Corporation concerning an overdue payment to Rhodes of $120.00. Rhodes is a furniture company associated with Rooms To Go. I've never bought furniture from either company. Mary says she has records, but can not tell me where she got the information. The persons name on this supposed account is one letter different from mine. Mary is not very good at speaking english. So getting this far along was grueling. She want me to confirm information and I told her I had no such account and confirming my information would not help her.
Mary left a call back #1-800-538-5814-ext524 I didnt call back and a man calls back later speaking better english. I just told him they have the wrong person. I truly believe this is a scam and if you call them back it is the phone calls you make back to them they charge you for.

I get this call every day at my work.  I do not answer it.  A message is always left very quickly by a foreign person who leaves only his name and phone number.  I have to listen to the message several times to barely understand the call back number.  It is very annoying, and I am afraid it will get me in trouble at work.  How do I make it stop?

Hey! I've got a guy calling me every day with the same number and extension. My grandma answered once and she said he was from a "protection agency" but maybe he said "collection agency" ... which would be a violation of Federal Law to disclose to a third party! I know this is personal, but do you have any debt that this could possibly be a collection call for? I've been wracking my brain and I can't think of any bill I haven't paid off. Also, the guy speaks in broken english and is hard to understand... I've never spoken to him but he calls every day

Call came up as unavailable...voicemessage left...a guy or girl?? with TERRIBLE broken english left this phone number 800-538-5814 ext 169. I think the name of the person was Rannah?? No other info left as to why they were calling or who they were.

Atleast if the company is going to use an India call center, get the staff members some decent english language training!! This is one of the worst by far!!!

Personal business call

They call and ask to talk to me by name.  When I ask who is calling they only ask for me by name and say they can give no other information until they are talking to me.  I then hang up.  This morning I had a message to call "Shreve"? back at this number.  I am assuming they are from the same group.  Who are they?  They must not be legitamate since they will not answer my question of what company they represent.  BTW, who are you?

I wish they would stop calling, they call EVERY DAY like clockwork.  I never answer either.

A foreign man spoke in broken English, couldn't understand the name he left but left an 800 number to return his call.

Call but takes so fast that its hard to even get the return phone #.
