Got a call this morning about 8:20 from 840-065-4123.  The high-pitched noise made it very difficult to hear, but the guy had a heavy accent, tried to tell me I had logged onto a website that could harm my computer.  He knew my name, and when I asked where he was calling from, he said Manchester, England.  When I mentioned the noise on the line, he hung up, and called back in a couple of minutes.  I shouldn't have answered, but did, and the noise was still there.  I hung up quickly.  The caller ID said "name not found."

Phone rang at 9 am on Saturday morning and it was a Nancy Brown who hardly speak a bit of English telling me my computer sent her an alert she was with Microsoft. In a hard but polite way I informed her not to call back.

We get calls from this number a lot.  There's no answer for a second then just a beep and and automated voice saying Good-bye... so annoying because we get these calls 3-4 times a day.

>>> This really annoys me.  Supposedly our government is spying on US citizens and others around the world, but they cannot stop this kind of nonsense from happening to innocent people.? <<<

I have no way of knowing what spying is done by the US government on citizens, but I would suppose that they might think that preventing terrorists from killing US citizens is a little more urgent than rushing out to satisfy your petty annoyances, particularly since you are reporting only a single hang-up call instance.

I don't like the idea of my government spying on me, either.  But I think I would have to agree with their thinking in accordance with my speculation above, if that is, indeed, the case.  More so, I would hate to lose my right to phone people if all I had to do to lose that right was call someone by accident, realize my mistake, and hang up just as the callee answered.  I think that would be a pretty intrusive action by the government, too.

There is currently no area code "840" assigned in the North American Numbering Plan.  Nor is it permitted under the plan for the second group of three digits (the "exchange") to be less than "200."  The North American Numbering Plan is adhered to by telephone companies in the US, Canada, and a number of other small countries (but not Mexico).

However, an 840xxxxxxx number *could* be a number in Abkhazia.  (Check Wikipedia if you don't know where it is.  It suffices here to say that the status of Abkhazia is a central issue of the Georgian?Abkhazian conflict.)  Although their country code starts with a "7," your caller ID unit may be dropping the "7" if it only displays North American-style 10 digit numbers.

These people have called me multiple times but the one this morning at 7:00 a.m. did me in.  I answered & "Patrick" was obviously from India.  He said something about Windows & wouldn't quit talking so I said "Hey" three times really loud & he got belligerent.  Said "hey" back to me and kept talking so I hung up.  He called back four more times with me cutting him off with the answering machine button before he finally gave up.  These people have called numerous times, day & night and I am sick to death of it.

Got my third call from them ever this morning at 8:29. Like the previous two, there was no answer after I asked, "Hello?" A few seconds of silence passed, then I heard a high-pitched beep and a computer voice saying "Goodbye!" before the line disconnected. It's really starting to creep me out, and I'm glad I'm not the only one getting these calls ... though that could actually be an even worse thing if it's targeting multiple civilians.

Samspot has a good point, but I have the feeling that this might actually be something the US government is doing. Very creepy. If anything more happens, I'll get back to you guys

Received call twice - 6:39 & 6:41 a.m.!!!  I answered, but no response. It was irritating to receive the calls at a time that I have family staying with from out of town for Thanksgiving. I didn't want the phone waking my 11 month granddaughter.

I got a call at 8:50 am from this no. three days in a row.  Each time they told me they were IBM and  the info I was sending them was wrong.  Told them I wasn't sending them any info.  They said everything I did on my computer came to them.  They told me to log off my computer and go back on while I was talking to them and that would fix it.  I won't repeat what I told them to do.  All three days I told them not to call me etc etc.  All the callers sound oriental.

Phone call at 7:25 am EST on a Saturday morning.  Grabbed the phone on first ring, but did not speak.  Waited silently until line disconnected.  This is not a valid exchange (none start with a 0).  Reported to FTC.  Blocked future calls.  This really annoys me.  Supposedly our government is spying on US citizens and others around the world, but they cannot stop this kind of nonsense from happening to innocent people.?  What a crock.
