One last thing....

If you believe the bill to be yours and it is not on your credit report----do not pay it out of guilt. It WILL re-age the debt and suddenly an old bill paid will hit your credit report and lower your score.

If you need to feel better about an unpaid bill not on your credit report- donate the sum to charity.

VIOLATIONS can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission and possibly to your state department of financial institutions (or whomever regulates consumer protection/collections in your state).

The FDCPA - Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is a piece of federal legislation that you should familiarize yourself with so that you know your rights.  Toxic collectors, like this one, willfully and knowing violate consumers' rights each and every day.  Your best defense is to know your rights under the law.  Since the FDCPA is federal legislation it trumps state level laws and even if something isnt a violation of your state law, it can still be reported to the FTC and prosecuted in federal court.

Best of Luck.

I've received the same phone call, but since I know what bills I have and that I've been through this before with another scam bill collector, I know the diff!
I just called the Attorney General's office, let them know that I was being constantly called by some scam company, and they took care of everything. You can also call (Law Offices of Brandon A Block) LA,CA 323-330-9575 if you live in CA of course?

This number called my husband's parents house looking for me. I was awkwardly surprised being that I have never lived at my husband's parents residence and have never used their number as a contact. I have tried calling the number back and have not recieved a person on the other end.. just a machine that states to leave a message with name and number and case number. I am so confused because I am current with all debts and have never paid a bill late in my life!

O.k. see above two messages. I called back to be hung up on by a "Lisa". Then called back and spoke with a "Kevin". I told him what happened and that I wanted the company's address or state location to mail a letter requesting that they not contact me regarding this person. He stated that due to his personal safety he couldn't give that out. I questioned this being that it was a "company". He stated that he would take me off their list and I should not be bothered in the future.  If I get another one like this I will let you all know. I am still contacting agencies regarding this matter.

O.K. Anyways this man stated that I had anger issues due to not speaking with this person. I asked him to take me off their reference list. I've never had to deal with these people before in my life. Then he asks if this was my home or my work number. I told him that I was not comfortable giving him that information. I felt like he should already know that. Since they called me. Then he stated that I needed to get a job. Well, I have a great husband who can allow me to have the opportunity to be a stay at home mother. Then I asked him for his name and company. He did not give me his name and just stated that they were a check recovery systems. Very unprofessional. Taking care of this.

First got this call and heard message twice. Called back to get disconnected tone. Called right back to get message that number could bot be completed as dailed (I noticed that it was not the usual recording from phone company0. Called back a third time where it rung until a man answered. I Told them I did not have contact with the person that a recording listed and to call with case number reference. I did not write reference number down due to not concerning me. Anyways I gave him my phone number where he said that I was listed as a reference. I said that I would not give this person a good refence due to not agreeing with their lifestyle and having no contact with them. See next message.

If they are calling you, you need to write them a letter or reply on a bill that you do not wish to be contacted by phone. In most states, this is a permanent solution, in some, it is about a 30 day solution while they to verify the debt. To verify the debt, they need to get the original paperwork, which is likely non-existent. As for calling you at work, you can ask that on the phone, but in a few states, they can contact you again at work after something like 9 days.

They should not call you more than once in a day if they spoke to you. Not more than 3x if they left an answering machine messaage.

Some collection agencies will honor a do not call request via email, but not many.

Your best bet is to look t your credit report online. If the bill is on your report and it is not yours or you have a problem with the amount or it is more than 7 years since is was first reported as delinquent, disputing through the credit reporting agency will get the best results.

"Not Mine" or "7 years past first being reported as delinquent" are the best choices.

You can do this with all 3 for about $30, don't sign up for monthly credit monitoring if you don't want to.

If it is old, like 5-7 years, and it is not on your credit report- just ignore them. It will probably not ever show up on your credit report.

I recommend looking at all 3 bureaus every 6 months.

This is a collection agency. They have a bad rep for breaking the FDCPA. The FCPA rules can vary from state to state (as to calling hours, how many times to call, calling at work, etc) but what it does not vary on is how often and what to say when calling 3rd parties.

They have called my mother and my aunt several times and say that I am a 'person of interest in an important legal mater, that I should call 866-31-3122 or further action will take place. You have been informed".

They have called 2 relatives multiple times- definitely not allowed.
The wording is definitely not allowed, it makes them sound like a law enforcement agency. They are supposed to call a 3rd party only once and politely  ask that their phone number be passed on to who they are trying to reach in regard to a confidential business matter. (I used to work for a collection agency).

I filed a complaint at ftc.gov.

CRS can be googled, they are located in Texas.

Received a call this am with the same threatening message ending with "you have been warned." The name they said on the message was "Jill." I was a little concerned so I called. The line was answered by a woman, simply stating "VIVIAN GREEN." I gave the "Case Number" which was left on the automated message. She then asked whom she was speaking with. I asked who she was trying to reach. She would not give me a name. She said "I know you are who I need to talk to, because your name is coming up on caller ID." Again, I asked whom she was trying to reach. Anyways, she continued to be rude and eventually hung up on me. When I called back, (I was very upset) another person answered the line, this time stating the business name of "Check Recovery Services." I told her to take my number off of the calling list, noted her name, and told her I was doing so and that if I received another call, I would be reporting it. To be honest, I don't have any clue where it would be reported, but you have to be able to stop these people from hassling you.

My ex boyfriends Parents received a call from 866 331 3122 looking for me in reference to a case number.  I have not even be with this man for 15 years and they are calling his parents.  I tried calling and the line was busy.  Then about the 10th time they answered as if it was an attorney's office.

I received an automated call from this number 919-741-4969 on 05-14-09. Female voice indicated I was named "a person of interest in a very important matter. It is imperative you return my call at 866-331-3122 & refer to case # -----. Failure to do so would result in further proceedings. You have been notified." I am not the person they are claiming a person of interest. That is a relative that lives on the opposite coast.

I received an automated call from this number again. Female voice indicated I was named "a person of interest in a very important matter. It is imperative you return my call at 866-676-9730 & refer to case #...Failure to do so would result in further proceedings. You have been notified." This is from a collection agency called Check Recovery Services.  They are trying to collect on an old debt.  Most likely a payday loan.  They use "legal" threatening language to scare you but the most they can do is civil procedings for collection.  They have called my family members as well and called from different numbers than this one.  It's very questionable collection tactics.  Report them to the FCC!!!

On my answer machine,I received an automated call from this number on 04-17-09. Female voice indicated I was named "a person of interest in a very important matter. It is imperative you return my call at 866-676-9730 & refer to case # -----. Failure to do so would result in further proceedings. You have been notified." On 04-20-09, same message from 616-928-3981 (land line phone in Holland, MI.) I notified local police & they said it is a scam & to do NOTHING. They are trying to get credit card numbers & information. If you do get stuck talking to them, I was told to ask that everything be sent to you in writing but do not give out your address (if they called you, they should have your address). I was also told these phone calls can be reported to your state Fraud Dept.
