DO NOT return the call from someone calling from a 876 area code.
This is not a toll free "800" number, it is the international long distance code for the island nation of Jamaica. You are charged international and long distance rates for calling this number. Other international/long distance area codes are 809, 284, and 649.

Scammers use these numbers to not only try to scam you out of money, but also sting you with high phone call rates.

Do report the calls, Jamaican and US officials are still actively tracking down and arresting the offenders:

It is a scam:

They never require any money, purchases, taxes, fees, or deposits of any kind to get your prize.

Publishers Clearing House DOES NOT call, email, FAX, mail, any advanced notice that you have won.

"If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to represent PCH, or claiming to be one of our employees,  and asked to send or wire money (for any reason whatsoever, including taxes); or send a pre-paid gift card or Green Dot Moneypak card in order to claim a sweepstakes prize ? DON?T!  It?s a SCAM. If you are sent a check, told it?s a partial prize award, and asked to cash it and send a portion back to claim the full prize award, DON?T.  The check is fake, but the SCAM is real!

Publishers Clearing House does not operate this way and would NEVER ask for money to claim a prize award.  PCH employees would never contact you personally or in advance to notify you of a prize award.  Our prize awards are presented just the way you see in our popular TV commercials, ?live and in person? by our Prize Patrol, with balloons, champagne and check in hand - - and with no advance notification!"

Prize Offers: You Don?t Have to Pay to Play!
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel17.shtm

excerpt from FTC CONSUMER ALERT
A Dozen Ways to Protect Yourself
The next time you get a "personal" letter or telephone call telling you "it?s your lucky day," the Federal Trade Commission encourages you to remember that:

1. Legitimate sweepstakes don?t require you to pay or buy something to enter or improve your chances of winning, or to pay "taxes" or "shipping and handling charges" to get your prize.

If you have to pay to receive your "prize," it?s not a prize at all.

I got a call from this number claiming  he is from Publishers Clearing House.  He told me I won 2.5 million dollars and a pearl white mercedes.  I told him I didn't believe him and hung up.  He called back  and scream at me why I hung up.  I told him this was a scam and if he calls back again that I would give this number to the police and press charges. After that he hung up and didn't call back.

Got this call from a guys saying I won like 1.5 mil. He asked if I was the owner of the phone but of course I lied & said no, the owner is not here but I guess the guy wasn't listening to a word I said cause he then asked how I felt about winning so I just hung up. Then I blocked the number.

I had the same exact experience today from a Jonathan Reid.  Said I won $850,000 and a Pearl white Mercedes Benz. Then asked me to go to a western union, K mart, etc to pay $450 that would be refundable. I said I wasn't going anywhere. He asked for my e-mail but accidently hung up and in the mean time I googled his number and found your response and also found this on the PCH website http://pch.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_ ... vR04zMk5iWWs%3D Hope nobody falls for this!

This was a good one...Larry Cooper from Publishers Clearing House to tell me I won 1.5mil and a "pearl white" Mercedes. Asked me how I felt about winning, I said "skeptical" but let him keep talking for a good laugh. After telling me to write down a bunch of numbers he kept asking if I could get to a Fred Meyer, Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart etc. Of course it was to wire money to pay for them to pay for the taxes and would be fully refunded...what I joke! He asked me again how I felt about winning I said "I think this is a load of BS" and then he hung up...that was funny.
