These guys are everything described above and more.  Most of the debt they purchase was written off by its issuer, so paying them does nothing to imporve your credit.  You already have the write off on your credit, which cannot be erased, so paying them is merely something that you would do because you are tired of them calling, that's really the only benefit.  They can do nothing to help you, they have no legal action they can take, and there are no credit oriented benefits, so why pay them?

I bought, online, for $30 a call blocking software that basically hangs up on them, as soon as the phone rings.  It's called IdentaFone Pro.  You add callers to your address book and then choose if you want to block them, do nothing (let it ring through) or let them hear a custom message "like #*$& you, weasel".

I am pissed with a capital P. AMO called several months ago about a account balance of 425.00. They say if I make a payment arrangement of 50 a month the account will be in protected status and not post to credit agencies. I take them up on it. To make a long story short im down to maybe three or four payments. The man from AMO I have been dealing with calls and says hey if u settle with me for 89.53 we can close this account and you will never hear from us again. I accept. Well come to find out they reported me to the credit agencies the same month they made payment arrangements with me (liars) When i call to confront them on this they have the gall to say we will fix this if you pay the remaining balance. That's right...they wanted me to pay the rest of the money after THEY offered a settlement and closed the account. I think that is pretty close to extortion. We'll fix the credit report if you pay us the rest of the money you techniclly do not owe us anymore. They are a bunch of crooks.

these guys are the bottom feeders.  they buy debt that collection agencies were unable to collect.  Typically, after 30 days of trying to reach you, a collection agency will close the file, or sell it to someone like this.  Because they are not officially a collection agency, they are not governed by the same rules, so you will have a very hard time stopping them.  They also don't care how many times or for how many months they call you, for them its a bet.  They bought the debt at $0.10 on the $1.00 and if the collect 20% of them, they are making good money.  Their cost to autodial you is minimal, so they hope that you'll get tired of them calling.  Their primary tactic is nuisance, that's why they often don't answer the call, if you wait through their message.  they are mostly just trying to annoy you into paying.

I usually keep my prepaid cell turned off to conserve the battery.

I received 2 messages in my VM from a collection agency (can't remember name) looking for a woman.  The message stated that if I'm *not* the person, I should hang up, and if I *am* the person, keep listening.

I left my phone turned on yesterday, and they called again.
The caller asked if I was the woman.  I said no, the woman they're looking for isn't at my number.  The caller then said OK, thank you and hung up.  No hassle, no problems.

My take on this is that cell numbers get recycled a lot, especially with prepaid phones like mine.  Perhaps the woman they were looking for used to use the number, or my number got listed accidentally.

While calls like this can be annoying or even scary, I didn't get the impression that I was being harrassed.  It was probably just a collector looking for someone who owed a debt, and my prepaid cell number got stuck on her list for some reason.  Once I told her that I was not the woman, they left me alone.

Hope this helps.

West Asset Management.  This is a relentless collection agency.  They will call twice/day 6-days/week from 8:30am to 9:30pm should they believe you are the target account holder.

They handle various types of accounts including Government Student Loans--mine is from the 1970's and do they still think I'll send them $1 to make them stop calling?  I enjoy their lack of success more than they enjoy all the harrassing calls.

I don't mind playing their stupid game for another 40 years.  Catch me if you can...I'm the Gingerbread Man.

West Asset Management can't even manage their "Asset" if they dropped the ET off Asset.

Relentless calls from this collection agency (West Asset Management).  They handle various accounts including Government Student Loans (mine is from the 1970's !!)  Whatever you do, don't confirm your name unless you plan on getting 2 calls/day until your account has been paid!

This is an automatic phone call, they call me 3 times a day leaving messages on my answering machine asking for someone I don't know. In the message it says that this is not a collection agency, but it sure sounds like one. Is there a way I can contact my phone company to block those kind of calls? They are very annoying because their message is very long.

This guy calls me asking for some obscure name that obviously isn't me. He's calling my cell phone several times each month randomly. Most of the time I answer nobody picks up, but this time I got an actual human being. The conversation goes something like this :

them: "Hi, is this so and so?"
me : "No, it's not. Remove me from your calling list."
them : "Well how can I remove you if I don't know this is the guy?"
me : "What? **** ***** Take me off your list or I'm calling the police."
them : "Wait, who is this?"
me : "Like I said, I'm calling the cops, bye."

That's basically how it went except more cursing. The guy I was talking to sounded like some kind of shady CIA figure from the X-files. I could totally picture him with some menacing wire frame glasses thumbing down a list of numbers thinking he's dogg the bounty hunter.
