I got a call from them yesterday (as david said above, it came up on my phone as Toll Free Call) and heard the message about calling back to take my number off their list as they were calling for the wrong person. Called back today, the call was answered electronically with the same Dept. of Education stuff as noted above, but a person came on after less than a minute and she said they'd remove my number from their system. Here's hoping.

We already have arrangements with the US Department of Education. And these jack holes call and lie by saying the new girl who set up our arrangements messed up and they need to update their files. This is their way to get  your information. Thank god I was there when my poor husband got this call they may have succeeded. Now to call every agency and report these guys to every entity I can. Their Bottom feeders be careful who your talking to before spouting off your account #'s

Someone from 888-337-9833 just started calling my company asking for my boss (who is our CFO).  He is claiming that he needs to verify Mr. BlahBlah's (leaving the name out for identity protection) employment status via social security number.  He claims to have the SS # and that he needs to speak with someone who can verify the information.  I told him we outsource these types of calls and we are not permitted to provide such information.  When I asked him if he wanted the number of our verification company, he then proceeds to tell me that I am misunderstanding what he needs and that he is looking for someone who can verify Mr. BlahBlah's employment status.  My response once again is that they need to contact our outside service to do such a thing.  He gets very irritated with me because I won't provide this SCAM ARTIST with what he wants.  Do they not realize that people nowadays are educated about such scams???  I can't believe people are still trying these tactics for identity theft.  If you care about your own identity and credit status, DO NOT PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION to these people if you receive a call from this phone number.

Computer generated recording spouted something about discreet info not suitable for others in regards to me and to Press 1 to hear it.  I did and computer voice said they would connect me with an Agent.  Instead, it said none was available bu to leave my name and social security number...

Believe me when I say that the US Department of Education DOES NOT need a collection agency to collect on student loans.  They handle theirs directly and through the IRS.  Don't even entertain their calls; deal directly with your creditor.

Another harassment call from an unidentified toll number (888-337-9833), I never respond to any unidentified names, or numbers.  Internet search provided this unknown toll number being used by VAN RU Credit Corporation located in Des Plaines, IL.  I used a call block device (DIGITONE Call Blocker) from Digitone Communications at  http://www.digitone.com/  best investment i ever made for this unwanted, unidentified callers.   This unit can block any number by whole area codes, area codes+prefix number or direct 10 digit numbers.

Believe me, the US Dept of Education DOES NOT need a collection agency to collect on student loans! They have the IRS for that.  If you owe a student loan,(or any other debt)it's in your best interest to always deal directly with the creditor, and you have that right.

I do have student loans...but I am at least one month ahead on four of them and two years ahead on the last. What I don't have, however, is the time to deal with these oxygen thieves. I got a call from these people out of the blue today, and if they keep it up I'm gonna take the advice of the guy 3 posts ahead of me.

Missed a call from these people on my newish cell number today.  I truly appreciate the people who have posted here so I know it is a scam.  We are in our 60s and do not have any student loans or kids with student loans.  I wish it were possible to "reach out and touch" some of these crooks in person.

I hooked my phone to a fax machine, I answer it if I know the caller, all others get fax! It works!

I do not answer unknown calls someone is calling me several times a day this last call was at 7am , that too early for family to be even calling

My lawyer filed in court, they settled and I got just under the 1,000 limit.  Tell them once to stop calling, and contact that link if they don't back down.

these clowns (Van Ru) call from multiple numbers including ones in my state (probably google voice numbers which are free and can be dumped for a new one every few minutes if need be).

If you have joined the digital revolution like me you have given up your land line grabbed a smart phone and are now getting crap on your handset 24/7/365. Well, I downloaded a call filter app (Mobile Manager is my second app I'm trying out) and you just add the number to the blacklisting feature. No more calls and no more Text messages from these guys or any other bothersome entities.

Never pay a collection agency!! I have made that mistake in the past and the minute they get 5-10k out of you they sell your debt and disappear the payment record (your own records will be of little use because you will have to go to court and spend more money to prove you already paid the debt, then they sell the debt again and it starts all over with another company). They get a payout and you get the shaft. If you want to pay the debt tell the collections agent you will only make payments to "the originator of the loan" and no one else.

Got a call from this number. they used my full name. and i said yes thats me. They said they had verified my employment with my social. they said the last 4. NOT MINE. so i said wait.... and he stumbled and said a birthdate that was not mine. He repeated the last 4 and i said no thats not my social or birth date. he said no we veified through your employer with that social. I said no thats not my social. he said have a nice day and hung up. i went to our HRO in the building who verifys employment etc. She NEVER had anyone try to verify my employment.

I feel bad for the guy who has the same name as me and actually owes them money.

Got a call from 888-337-9833 today 11/11/11, the female  kept asking if I was "Blank Blank" she didn't ID herself or the nature of the call when I didn't respond too her asking if I was "Blank Blank" she ask if I knew "Blank Blank" I never give  my ss number to anyone who call's and doesn't first ID themselves, the nature of the call etc; besides, I never give anyone my ss number or any info period!

A woman called, asking for my adult daughter, said my daughter had applied for a loan and gave my name as a "reference."  This was very fishy so I asked caller if she was a debt collector. "Oh, no no." Yeah, right.  She gave an incorrect address for my daughter, on a street she NEVER lived on, in hopes that I would correct her and give her the right address. Also, my daughter is married now and wouldn't be applying for credit using her maiden name.  These people are tricky. My daughter does have a student loan that she's behind on so I'm thinking that is why they called. But why not just come out and tell me you are a collection agency instead of lying and telling me my daughter applied for a loan? Is that even legal?

Seems this phone number was a lot of people and they oew a debt and then the phone company give it to other people and you get these RUDE collection a***s treating u like crap, this is way out of line and they never say they are sorry or nothing  just treat you like a criminal.  NO that does not work cause you treat me like crap u get it in return..

These people keep calling my parents house asking for me and they are fed up with it.  I want to know how to stop them they used my daughter's name to identify themselves, she's only 15 yrs old!  I don't think she is calling from an automated number

Calling for Marilyn Funk who must owe a HUGE debt - but my phone is NOT her number.  Letter mailed to Van Ru to stop calling my number.
Hope someone captures Marilyn Funk as I get tons of calls about her, and it's a real pain to have to answer them!

I'm pretty sure it's "Van Ru" Credit. They called this morning at 7:45am and then just silence. Then hung up and called again. They can kiss my a**.
