Anyone calling from any agency asking for your name is only proving (for future use in a legal proceeding or to the credit bureau) that you have been officially notified of the debt (they are most likely using a telephone recording device or saving their caller id records once you call them back).  

Once they can prove that you have been notified (whether you acknowledge the debt or not to them on the phone) they can extend the statute of limitations for them to continue trying to pursue the debt.  Check your local Statute of Limitations Act to see how long this extension will be (as they vary from province to province & state to state.  

If you just ignore these calls completely after the Statute of Limitations is over you can contact the credit reporting agencies and have the item line regarding your debt completely removed from your credit profile and officially tell these collection agents to stop calling you as it is past the Statute of Limitations date!
 
But, If you were naive enough to call them back (even if it was to argue with them to stop calling you) you have unwillingly extended the date for which you can be harassed.  

NOTE:  Certain Government debt has no Statute of Limitations so be aware of that.  Hope this helps...

Not to add to the noise with the same info, but I get calls once a day in the AM from what I believe to be a number from Ontario Canada. (Possibly collection agency as suggested above.) The problem is, i'm not the person they are asking for nor do I know the person. This is my company phone. They keep harrassing me. How can they be blocked so they don't waste my minutes. This is the number that keeps showing up on my caller id: 905-480-1331. I wonder if there is a protection bureau or agency for a do not call list for mobile providers or international regulations around this kind of silliness.

They called me and said press 1 for english. It dials somewhere, I hear hold music and then after 10 seconds it hangs up.

I called and asked for business name before disclosing any information. They wanted my name. Then put me on hold. So I hung up.
Rule #1 - if they will not give you full business information and the nature of the call - no personal details are needed to do this, then do not give them personal information.

Researching the 877 number revealed nothing significant.  Then I read these postings and found the number 905 480-1331.  It was found  in the peoplesmart phone look up and revealed that these calls originate from Canada - hence the 877 number does not register. Also when you call it there may be a charge unless your phone service provides free calls to US and Canada - it is not toll free to US phones.

The location is Unionville, Ontario as best I can tell without paying money near the intersection of Dennison and Copeland Avenues.

I called the 905 480-1331 number and it sure was the number from which Kate called - her extension 6167 worked just fine and Franks extension 8712 did not.

I should have sent in a bunch of * to drive their phone system nuts or get to an operator.

It appears that this tactic lets these people call anyone in the US without penalty. The do not call list stops at the border. Any complaints should be made to Canadian authorities or the Department of State (Like they will really do anything).

Rule #2 - if you cannot find the phone number in reverse lookup, it is likely a non-us number so ignore the call - or call them back and harass them. Change this rule to first Google the phone number it is faster to help tell what is happening.

Now for the information you helped me find.

The company is apparently GCC or Global Credit and Collections.

Apparently they claim to work for Capital One - so call Capital One and complain.

I believe they are JUNK DEBT COLLECTION - agencies -  google it and educated yourself - also
get a copy of your credit report and see what garbage they can put on your file.

To clear this up your will have to send a letter disputing it.

They will not leave you - they will recycle your  telephone number every 2-3 months  to another JUNK DEBT COLLECTOR! and this can go on for years.

Never call back because this will confirm your telephone in their system. Just ignore - they cannot do a thing except bugging the hell out of you. Plus it is an automatic call. A Robot.

Check out your phone company and see what services are available. In Canada - Bell has *91,*92 *90 -educate yourself.

Never call them- if you see another 1-888,1-866 or 1-905 - number you do not recognize -
just google  the number - this way you will have an idea who it is....

again, do not call them to find out who they are first -  GOOGLE THE NUMBER FIRST!!

I am 1-905 and 1-888- free!!! yay! it took a long time for me figure this out.

I finally got call block put on! i am gonna zapppp them. Yesterday. I am allow up to 12 numbers.
So if these are junk debt collectors - then they can recycle the number, but I can add  them.

another thing i did was turn off my answering machine - Bell Code *91, to activate *92 to de-activiate.
Check out Bell codes: they gave explanation. No one can leave messages. Alot of people  do not know about this service - will comes with your service. Check it out.

Also I have a voice phone that announce the caller - so it is up to me to answer or not - works great.
However, they used to call me 4-5 times a day.

It is one day old - so far no new calls from these people. Do not answer these calls and do not send or gave any personal info or money.

Also.... I add my number on the govt/ DO NOT CALL list. (this is for 1800- 1866 numbers - they used to call from this number, now they cannot call me - they are now calling from 1-905 #.
So yesterday I block that too - will see what will happen.

So if I am home,

after listening to annoying and threatening voicemails left over the last two weeks (905-413-8583), I finally answered and pressed #2 to remove my number from their list.    Had to wait a moment, but some guy came on and I said "why the calls and what are they trying to do?"  He wouldn't give an answer and asked my name,  I asked him again "why" and no answer.   He asked if I was " so and so" and I said no, "he doesn't live here."    Hopefully this is the last time they bother me!!!

I started receiving a call from 905-480-1331 last week and he left a message sayin that his employer file this case at this office for a refusable regarding a personal business manager, something about tax season and wanting to settle this issue voluntary and to call 1-877-234-1838.  I just ignore it and I been getting the call every day and he left a message.  Then today another call from 905-479-3334 and the lady left a message which sound the same as the guy message but she left a different number 1-866-350-4275 x6537.  She said she's calling from GCC or JCC.  It sounded suspicious so I called 905-480-1331, the rep pick up and said Global International.  I ask what kind of company this was and she said what is your name?  She had my name already on her system when I called and  I asked where she is located.  She sound as if she didnt want to say but she said where I called is in Canada but there office is in New York.  So i said I don't want to speak with anyone out of the country so I hung up.  It sound like a scam and I have been scam before because they scare you into thinking you will go to jail for the debt.

I received a call from 905-480-1331 telling me about a debt I need to settle. I returned the call to 877-234-1838 and a man answered and asked if I knew a Mark, I said no. He apologized for the phone call and hung up on me. This is indeed a scam and I am doing all I can to get this taken care of because, frankly, it pisses me off.

I got call from (905)4801331 left a message that made no sense and soundin like a fake answering machine saying was saturday feb 19th when that wasn't even the right date and that when I just deleted the message cause it sound like a scam

I just called 866-350-4275 and was told they would remove my number - we'll see...

We have been receiving calls also from this number and it says Ontario on the caller I.D.  We finally picked up tonight and asked why they are calling us and they said they would take our number off their calling list. I asked why they are calling and they mentioned a persons name and I said I didn't know that person and they hung up. Other than the aggrevation has this cost anyone money? All the things we read on this page says they are a scam, but what are they scamming?

They have called twice now, each time looking for my sister in law, it comes from the Global International. I dont know what their business is but I have told them both times to remove my number from their list, in once case I even gave them my sister-in-law's phone number to get them off my back and they called back. I told them if it happens a 3rd time i am taking legal action. I really hope this stops them.

(Posting for elderly parents)  This number is one of four that has been calling my parent's phone.  The message says they need to talk to them regarding the clearing up of some mysterious financial issues prior to tax filing. They make it sound very serious and needs to be responded to promptly.  In fact, however, they are part of a scam being run by a company known as Global International or Global CC.  My parents have no unpaid debt and no credit cards so no legitimate reason to be called.  My Mom let them know to remove her number from the call list, but nothing changed.  I have filed a complaint with the FTC.  These people need to be stopped.

I did not answer and they left no message. Called back and was told to hold, and it was while I was reading these comments so I hung up.

We have received numerous calls from this # with a message that requests a return call. We tried clling one time and were put o9n hold..

905-480-1331 from Ontario has been calling several times a week for many weeks now.  Leaves messages to call a number to clear up a financial matter.  Today message was, Last call to take care of problem.  From the very beginning did not feel right.  We can only hope this is the last call.

Several calls from this number, caller id displays ONTARIO and number 905-480-1331.when I answer they state a live representative is ready , press any key to  connect. I did not press any key and it appeared was going to connect me ANYWAY? I hung up. I work in telecommunications for my company and ran a call report on our system, it showed the calls to be from Unionville Ontario.

Keeps calling, but I don't pick up and they don't leave messages.
